This girl is 15 and a friend of mine. She is one of the many kids at Char Para who takes great interest in us western student researchers, learning English from us and teaching us words of Bangali. She got married this week to a 25 year old guy from another village.
We flooded this, then empty, pond to simulate a major rainfall event, and found that E. coli levels in the adjacent shallow monitoring wells responded in a classic contaminant pulse, indicating that fecal bacteria were penetrating >8 m laterally into the aquifer. It is common practice to drill shall drinking water wells next to ponds such as these.
